Mariette van der Woude, Head of Music in primary here at Caxton, explains the benefits of music during the first years of education.

As many studies have proven, it is desirable for children to be exposed to and trained in music as of a very young age. 
Teaching music contributes to developing the children’s progress and learning in many different curricular areas. Music supports self-expression, cooperative play, creativity, and emotional well being. It also enhances the development of social, cognitive, communication, and fine and gross motor skills. 
Music and singing are a fun and effective way to help young children learn. Teaching songs to children is a great way to introduce another language. It enhances the vocabulary being targeted in a child friendly and playful manner. 
Here at Caxton, our music education begins in playgroup and is a natural part of your child’s daily routine. They learn to play instruments, they sing a range of songs and they move to music. 
When the children enter Nursery they receive one music lesson every week, taught by the specialist teacher.  
During Nursery and Reception lessons we cover 4 different elements of making music: 
– Singing, enhancing English vocabulary. 
– Moving to music, developing fine and gross motor skills. 
– Playing instruments, getting familiar with sound production, and improving the feel for a steady pulse. 
– Listening to a range of music from different cultures. 
Throughout their years here at Caxton, the children will learn to:
– Sing songs in harmony.
– Play tuned and untuned instruments. 
– Practise, rehearse and present performances. 
– Improvise, explore and explain their own ideas and feelings about music using appropriate musical vocabulary.
– Be creative and represent sounds using instruments. 
– Familiarize themselves with music from different cultures. 
– Develop their listening skills. 
– Read music and perform songs on the recorder.
